Researching Sporting ancestors in New Zealand

1949 reps all blacks trialists

There are other sources family historians can use while researching their family in New Zealand.  These can be family members who splayed a sport and there would be many places for a particular sport that you can research. One of My family members I was researching had said in the family file he was a trialist for the All Blacks. The All Blacks is the New Zealand Rugby team. I found the Rugby museum in Palmerston North in New Zealand and emailed asking about information on the person. The reply I received told me a lot about the family member’s career and they had a better quality photo of the team from when he was a representative in 1949. Below is part of the reply I received.

John Arthur Gabolinscy played 12 games
for the Bay of Plenty representatives 1948-51, from the Kahurkura club until
1949, then the Minginui club. He also played for a Bay of Plenty-King
Country team against Thames Valley-Wikato in an All Black trial in 1948.
We have in the Rotorua RSU history a photo of the 1949 Rotorua team,
captained by Gabolinscy.

The next place to be contacted was the town library where the man lived and they were able to find the results for several of the matches he had played through the newspapers.

Museums are not only places to visit to look at their collections; they may also hold valuable information that can help a family historian gather about their family members and other people researching the teams and sporting identities.
